My Tailor is a Computer Scientist

From screens to suits...

Good Morning.

I’m getting married in 3 weeks.

When you’re planning a wedding, you interact with a bunch of new people.

Ideally, each of them play an impactful, positive, rewarding role in the experience.

As a groom to be, there is a very delicate line to tow.

You must remain engaged and offer opinions on hundreds of small decisions knowing full well that often times those opinions will be ignored or discarded.

But despite this, you cannot disengage - otherwise you “don’t care” and the missus gets upset.

Most of you are married and know this already.

However, if there’s one domain where you’re in control - it’s your suit.

The Art of a Tailor

For a man, this is a sacred ritual.

Tailoring is a pure form of curation.

It is expressed in its final form physically, but it starts in a place far below the surface.

Each man is different. His style, color tone, body shape, confidence…the list goes on.

Most of us are too busy with our lives to take the time to understand the difference in fabrics, shape or cohesion.

This is where a tailor comes in.

From Screens to Suits

I met my tailor for the first time about 2 months ago.

His name was Ali.

Tall, youthful, slender, curly black hair, glasses, personable, self assured.

He proudly proclaimed I was in good hands as he was THE custom suit guy in his shop.

Whether this is true or not, it doesn’t matter, because he made me feel like he was.

He knew everything about suits.

How a jacket should look, where it needs to come in, how it needs to rest.

He also knew alot about me.

He listened, gave suggestions, showed multiple options, but somehow was always two steps ahead.

He made me feel comfortable.

He was good at his job because he genuinely loved it.

He showed it in his actions and his knowledge.

He even said it multiples times: “I love my job. I love suits. I love style & fashion.”

What a palette cleanser.

How many people do you know who “love their job”?

Here’s the best part: he let slip that this was a relatively new venture for him.

He’d only been at this tailor game for 4-5 years.

“I got a degree in Computer Science. I used to work at Microsoft.”

I was stunned. But on the other - it made perfect sense.

He looked like a computer scientist.

However, he needed not say a word more for me to decide I was going to tell his story.

Tailoring feels like a bit of an old-world trade.

A lost art…or at least one that feels more rare & exclusive.

You don’t see many guys getting degrees in suits and ties.

You see alot more computer scientists.

Why leave the house when your phone avatar shows you in every style instantly?

Well, because then you miss out on a story.

You miss out on an experience.

You miss out on an opportunity to do something uniquely human.

To get out of your routine.

To have a day.

Go on, have a day!
